Brain Breaks are more important now than ever before!
We are all under a different amount of pressure as our lives have shifted and changed over the last month. Many are trying to manage a new way of working from home that might include sharing your workspace with partners, kids, and pets. Or maybe you are under the stress of having a loved on the front line in healthcare, first responders, or essential business. This alone can be stressful, but let’s add on that you might also be learning new ways of working!
Let’s talk about what is happening and why we are all feeling this added pressure, fear, and anxiety. When our lives have been threatened, real or perceived, our nervous system takes action. This action over an extended period of time leaves us feeling a little fried, to say the least. You may not be sleeping as well or feeling more agitated than normal. This is the body in survival mode. When you spend an extended period of time in survival mode you can become depleted. It is very hard to concentrate, create, and focus when we are functioning in this way.
Brain breaks are way to coax the nervous system in to settling. When you are in the present moment there is no fear, anxiety or pressure, and you begin to feel safe. When the body feels safe you are more relaxed, concentration, memory, creativity and focus are more accessible. These are qualities we need to be productive at work as well keep our immune systems strong.
Please take these short breaks throughout your day to take care of yourself so that you can sleep better, focus and concentrate during this difficult time, and remain healthy for yourself and others.
