As a holistic form of healing, Yoga views the human system as not just the physical body. The whole body is comprised of several dimensions, including the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies. These dimensions of the human system are interconnected and therefore, interdependent. Yoga teaches that just because an illness manifests at the physical level does not necessarily mean that its cause is also in the physical level. The cause of the physical problem may, in fact, be rooted in problems related to another dimension of the system. By the same token, any practice has the potential to impact every dimension of the student’s system.
Yoga is a healing discipline that offers a broad range of tools for supporting health, healing, and personal transformation. It is a gradual process of letting go and learning to love yourself just as you are! Yoga uses postures, breathing techniques, meditation, gestures, sounds, guided self inquiry, and much more. Therapists and students alike can use these tools in an infinite number of ways to suit the unique needs of the individual throughout the ever-changing states of their lives.
My role as a teacher is to understand your needs and help you peel back the layers to reveal your inner wisdom.
What to expect in an individual yoga therapy session
- You will fill out an intake form detailing your health history, current situation, complaints, goals, etc.
- We’ll then go over that form together, in detail, so that I can gain a better understanding of where you are and where you would like to be. I will ask questions about your living situation, current lifestyle, diet, and activities that bring you joy! All of these things play a part in the way you feel!
- I will ask you to do simple movements to observe what is happening with you on the physical level as well as your breathing. This can effect both your mental and emotional well-being.
- After observing your movement, watching your breath, and learning where you are and where you would like to be, yoga therapy can begin. I will help you begin the process of healing physically, mentally, and emotionally through intuitive counseling and yoga techniques.
- I will create for you home practices/techniques that you can use outside of the session.
- The initial session typically lasts 90 minutes and follow up sessions are usually 60 minutes.
- The cost for individual sessions is $85 for 60 minutes. NO ONE WILL BE TURNED DOWN FOR FINANCIAL REASONS. This price is suggested and received with the energy of abundance.
What is the difference between Yoga Therapy and physical therapy?
Western physical therapy evaluates only on the individual’s structural level. Most people, regardless of age or level of fitness, will leave the office with the same set of exercises for similar issues.
Yoga Therapy includes breathing and focusing techniques in order to treat the entire person, which includes the structural, the physiological, and on the mental/emotional dimensions. Yoga Therapy also takes into consideration the individual’s age, current health status, and level of fitness.
What is the difference between Yoga Therapy and psychotherapy?
A western psychotherapeutic evaluation often examines an individual based on past experiences as well as the current level of stress. Then, the process is to have the person focus on these past experiences in order to bring forward feelings around these experiences, and hopefully begin the process of digesting them.
Yoga Therapy starts with what is happening right now with the individual on both the physical and the mental/emotional levels. While we do consider past experiences, as they certainly shape our current situation, we try not to keep the focus there. Instead, we try to change the relationship to the experience and start the healing process around these experiences. The process is much more subtle and uses a different part of the brain, but it can be profoundly effective. One of my teachers once stated that postures affect the past, breathing affects the present, and meditation creates the future!
Can Yoga Therapy work in conjunction with physical therapy and/or psychotherapy?
Absolutely! In fact, the combination is very powerful! With Yoga Therapy, the individual does much of the work with their personal practice, so the frequency of visits are usually less. The individual is responsible for doing a personal practice and therefore is an active participant in their own healing process. It can become quite empowering as the person begins to realize that they can influence how they feel by doing a certain set of movements, breathing, and focusing techniques.
